DAY REGIMEN

There is balance among therapy, labor, rest and entertainment in the programme. The residents participate in therapeutic groups each day. Residents are encouraged to organize and to participate in seminars and educational groups for learning foreign languages and professional skills. Evening activities include variety of games that teach residents to have fun without drugs.

The high expectations are in the basis of the program. Keeping to the day regimen and community rules is a basic element of the treatment process. Residents are expected to be active, responsible and to take part in all activities and roles of the programme.

THERAPEUTIC ELEMENTS

Therapeutic process in Phoenix House integrates the following therapeutic elements:

1.Individual therapeutic projects

Each resident meets his referent right after entering the program. The referent is a staff member who is completely engaged with the individual therapeutic project of the resident. This project includes basic problem areas in the resident’s life and describes ways of their solving within the programme.

2. Groups

  • Encounter
  • Static groups
  • Groups for personal growth
  • Relapse prevention groups (cognitive-behavior and schema-focused approach)
  • Groups for goals
  • Peer groups
  • Seminars
  • Vocational training

3. Activities that strengthen the structure and affiliation to the therapeutic community

  • Morning meeting
  • Evening meeting
  • General meeting

2.5. Results

Up to 2007, over 200 individuals have participated in Phoenix programme.

At follow-up, 72% of residents who have graduated the programme were completely recovered. These individuals cover all 5 social criteria of J. Jaffe (1984): reduced drug use and drug-related criminal activity, reduced state health and social expenditure, increased quality of life and increased employment rate of recovered individuals.
